In Fall 2023, the Gorge Commission partnered with Oregon State University Extension Service, Oregon Climate Change Research Institute, and the University of California Naturalist Program to bring a new climate change training program, Climate Stewards, to the Gorge. Sixteen community members from five Gorge towns learned about climate change impacts, communication methods, and local efforts to advance community and ecosystem resilience. Participants also worked on projects that supported several Climate Change Action Plan priorities including wetlands, cold water refuge streams, and fire risk.
The Gorge Commission unanimously adopted the Climate Change Action Plan at its meeting on December 13, 2022. Over the past year, Commission staff worked with dozens of partners including Tribes, county planning departments and commissions, state and federal agencies, community organizations, and others to develop the Climate Change Action Plan, a guide to climate adaptation and mitigation for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. We are deeply grateful to all those who helped develop this plan and offered input during the public comment period.
